Praying For Your Wife & Kids

When it comes to praying for your family, whether it be your wife and kids, or your husband and kids—this should not been seen as a daunting task we are obligated to do. Quite the opposite is true! We should feel honored that we get to pray for the ones we love.

Usually every night before bed, my wife and I will read our daily devotion together; after which I proceed to pray over my wife and our children. What kind of prayers do I speak on their behalf? The Bible tells us that the angels of God harken unto the voice of His word:

‘Bless the LORD, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.’

– Psalm 103:20, KJV

What this is talking about is that they listen for His spoken word to be said, when they hear it they act on it! Who speaks His word? We do! It is for this very reason that my main prayers I do over my family are Scripture; some ranging from whole chapters to several verses. I also apply the blood of Jesus over them, over where we live, vehicles we drive, schools the kids attend, places wherever we may go throughout our day—and upon the roads we take to get there.

I realize that there are so many Scriptures in the Bible that it may feel overwhelming trying to find the right ones to use, so I will list a handful of the ones I use so you can get a general idea; let the Spirit guide you in the right ones from then on.

Psalm 91
Psalm 23
Psalm 1:13
Psalm 2:3, 5
Psalm 4:8
Psalm 16:8-9
Psalm 37:4-5, 23-24
Psalm 46:1
Psalm 49:3
Psalm 118:17, 24
Psalm 119:105
Psalm 128
Psalm 138:8
Psalm 143:8, 10
Proverbs 3:5-6
Isaiah 32:17-18
Isaiah 53:4-5
Ephesians 6:14-18
3 John 1:2

This is only a partial list of all the ones I pray over my wife and kids. If you felt led to the same ones, then do so, if you felt led to only do a few and the Spirit gives you different verses, go with His leading on it. And be sure to keep a watch over your heart that in doing this it doesn’t become just a nightly routine that you have to do, ensure to keep your heart pure in the reasons you are praying Scripture over your family: because you love them and you get to!
